Harbor
Hill
The Mackay Estate
Roslyn, New York |
This beautiful estate of 600 acres was constructed at the turn
of the 20th century on a quiet hillside on Long Island. Clarence
H. & Catherine MacKay commissioned noted architect Stanford White
to build the country
house of their dreams.
It took years, millions of dollars and hundreds of craftsmen to
develop the 24,000 square foot french chateau and the many outbuildings
on this "gentleman's farm". Mr. Mackay (1874-1938) wanted Harbor
Hill to be impressive as well as a self contained active dairy farm
with
stables, greenhouses, cottages and a gatehouse. The MacKays asked
Stanford White to travel throughout Europe to buy antique furnishings
and suits of armor to be put on display. In 1924, a grand ball was
held here for the visiting Prince of Wales and over twelve hundred
of the most important people in the country dined lavishly and danced
the night away.
Although the forty plus room mansion was built to endure for hundreds
of years, the property fell into disrepair after Mr. MacKay's death
and by the mid 1940's the manor was demolished to make way for a
housing development.
